Why character counts matter for SEO

Search engines truncate. A page title much over sixty characters gets cut with an ellipsis, and a description past about a hundred and sixty is trimmed the same way — usually mid-sentence, taking your call to action with it. The bars above show where you stand against both.

Treat them as guides, not rules. Google measures the rendered width in pixels, so a title full of capitals runs out sooner than one in lowercase, and the exact cut-off shifts over time. Front-load the important words and the truncation matters much less.

How reading time is worked out

Words divided by two hundred, the usual figure for silent reading of ordinary prose, rounded up to at least a minute. Dense or technical writing runs slower; a list of names runs faster.

Nothing is stored

The counting happens as you type, in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere, so an unpublished draft stays unpublished.
